Feather edge Oak boards are a traditional type of cladding used to cover the exterior of a building. Most commonly used for barns, garages and stables it is becoming an increasingly popular choice for residential buildings, either as a cosmetic finish or as a weather proof exterior.
The term Feather Edge relates to the way the cladding is produced. Boards are cut diagonally in the thickness to produce a tapered section, typically 25mm down to 9mm. This method results in efficient use of timber maximising the area covered by the volume of timber. The overlap of the boards produces a stepped finished which is particularly good at shedding water.
Oak is a naturally durable timber, it requires no treatments to enhance durability, some people however chose to apply oils to darken the boards, this is purely a cosmetic decision. Without treatment Oak will weather back to a silver grey.
Green oak is cut in 200mm widths (other sizes to order) with lengths from 2.0m up to 4.5m. Boards should be fitted to the structure with sufficient overlap to allow them to shrink as they season. Pre seasoned timber is also available.
It is advisable to use non ferrous (or stainless) fixings with external oak as standard steel screws/nails will give a dark stain to the surface of the boards, this is not a structural problem but most people would prefer not to have the fixing highlighted in this way.
